Forklift Seat Belts - This guideline purpose is to explain the Regulation requirements for the application of operator seatbelts or restraints on lift trucks. It is the employers' liability to make sure that every machinery, piece of equipment and device inside the workplace is chosen and used rightly and operated according to the manufacturer's instructions.
With regards to their inspection, fabrication, use, design and maintenance Rough Terrain forklifts need to satisfy the regulations of ANSI Standard ASME B56.6-1992.
Side boom tractors and mobile equipment along with a Rollover Protective Structure, or ROPS for short, need to include seat belts which satisfy the requirements of the Society of Automotive Engineers, or SAE, Standard J386 JUN93, Operator Restraint System for Off-Road Work Machines. If any mobile machinery has seat belts required by law, the operator and subsequent passengers have to make sure they make use of the belts every time the vehicle is in motion or engaged in operation for the reason that this could cause the equipment to become unstable and hence, not safe.
If a seat belt or different driver restraint is required on a forklift.
The seat belt requirements while working a lift truck depend on different factors. Whether the lift truck is outfitted with a Rollover Protective Structure, the type of forklift itself and the year the forklift was made all contribute to this determination. The manufacturer's instructions and the requirements of the applicable standard are referenced in the Regulation.
With regards to to a driver restraint device, enclosure or system, ANSI Standard ASME B56.1-1993 in the case of powered industrial trucks, is intended to be able to assist the operator in reducing the possibility of entrapment of the torso and/or head between the truck and the ground in the event of a tip over. The restraint device or system can consist of a seat belt, even though a seat belt is not essentially a part of such machine or system.
