Forklift Brakes - A brake drum is where the friction is supplied by the brake shoes or brake pads. The pads or shoes press up against the rotating brake drum. There are some different brake drums types along with particular specific differences. A "break drum" would usually refer to if either pads or shoes press onto the inner surface of the drum. A "clasp brake" is the term utilized to describe when shoes press against the outside of the drum. One more kind of brake, called a "band brake" utilizes a flexible band or belt to wrap all-around the outside of the drum. Where the drum is pinched in between two shoes, it could be referred to as a "pinch brake drum." Like a typical disc brake, these kinds of brakes are somewhat uncommon.

Early brake drums, before the year 1995, required to be consistently adjusted in order to compensate for wear of the drum and shoe. "Low pedal" could cause the needed modifications are not done satisfactorily. The vehicle can become hazardous and the brakes could become ineffective if low pedal is combined together with brake fade.

There are different Self Adjusting Brake Systems presented, and they can be categorized within two main types, RAI and RAD. RAI systems have built in equipments that prevent the systems to recover if the brake is overheating. The most well known RAI makers are Bendix, Lucas, Bosch and AP. The most famous RAD systems consist of Volkswagen, VAG, AP, Bendix and Ford recovery systems.

The self adjusting brake will normally just engage if the forklift is reversing into a stop. This method of stopping is acceptable for use whereby all wheels use brake drums. Disc brakes are used on the front wheels of motor vehicles nowadays. By operating only in reverse it is less likely that the brakes would be adjusted while hot and the brake drums are expanded. If adapted while hot, "dragging brakes" could occur, which raises fuel consumption and accelerates wear. A ratchet mechanism that becomes engaged as the hand brake is set is another way the self repositioning brakes can operate. This means is only suitable in functions where rear brake drums are utilized. If the parking or emergency brake actuator lever goes beyond a particular amount of travel, the ratchet developments an adjuster screw and the brake shoes move toward the drum.

There is a manual adjustment knob located at the base of the drum. It is usually adjusted via a hole on the other side of the wheel and this involves going under the vehicle using a flathead screwdriver. It is of utmost significance to be able to move the click wheel correctly and modify each and every wheel equally. If uneven adjustment occurs, the vehicle can pull to one side during heavy braking. The most efficient method in order to make sure this tedious job is accomplished safely is to either lift every wheel off the ground and spin it by hand while measuring how much force it takes and feeling if the shoes are dragging, or give each one the same amount of clicks manually and then perform a road test.
